Oregon for Barack Obama
Oregon for Barack Obama

Senator Obama delivered the following remarks (as prepared) in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 3, 2008

Tonight, after fifty-four hard-fought contests, our primary season has finally come to an end.

Sixteen months have passed since we first stood together on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois.  Thousands of miles have been traveled.  Millions of voices have been heard.  And because of what you said – because you decided that change must come to Washington; because you believed that this year must be different than all the rest; because you chose to listen not to your doubts or your fears but to your greatest hopes and highest aspirations, tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another – a journey that will bring a new and better day to America.  Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.

I want to thank every American who stood with us over the course of this campaign – through the good days and the bad; from the snows of Cedar Rapids to the sunshine of Sioux Falls.  And tonight I also want to thank the men and woman who took this journey with me as fellow candidates for President.

At this defining moment for our nation, we should be proud that our party put forth one of the most talented, qualified field of individuals ever to run for this office.  I have not just competed with them as rivals, I have learned from them as friends, as public servants, and as patriots who love America and are willing to work tirelessly to make this country better.  They are leaders of this party, and leaders that America will turn to for years to come.

This is a gathering place for Oregonians who share Barack Obama's vision for a better America. Here we show our support for Barack and take action by signing online endorsement petitions.

A Chicago teenager remarked that most of us have heard of Obama only recently, but they've loved him a long time from his many years of community service. No doubt. We witnessed the crowds in Springfield, Illinois when Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States.

We believe in Barack as a great leader and we are committed to working together. Our goal: Get the best candidate, Barack Obama, to be President in 2008.

Signing the online petitions takes us one step closer to this goal. Your signature is of utmost importance; and the more signatures we gather, the more powerful our message. If you're under age, but will be able to vote in 2008, indicate "able to vote in 2008" instead of "No" under the field "Registered to Vote." The same applies if you have a green card but will be a U.S. citizen in time to register and vote in 2008. Take a moment to make sure that you fill in your complete address, ie. street, city and zip code. This will prove that you are indeed a constituent of the state and your district. Also note that the "Address" field is only one line.

The petitions will be delivered both electronically and handcarried hard copy on September 30, 2007. If we obtain a significant number of signatures earlier than this date, we would let the press know this is going on, then deliver the petitions earlier than this date. If it seems Obama will be taking the Democratic nomination (this is our hope), we will push the dates to gather more signatures and focus on endorsements pre-election rather than pre-primaries. With all other ongoing petitions, (Charles has an ongoing paper petition for OR-3 in Portland and Victoria and the group in Ashland is starting paper and newspaper petitions for OR-5), let's coordinate to deliver ALL the petitions together to ensure a great impact.

So, as Barack said, "Let's get to work."

Read about Barack and where he stands on the Issues, then sign the petitions.

Not from Oregon, but interested in starting petitions for your own state? Please immediately contact our U.S. Petition Coordinator, Jessica Boyle or contact her through either these groups: Facebook or Spread the Word.
